AO& Collective, Martin Mackowitz Architect – Buchboden, Austria

On the banks of the roaring Lutzbach, not far from the village of Buchboden, one of Austria’s strongest sulfur springs emerges. One liter of this water contains 29 mg of sulfide sulfur. The spring has long been known as the sulfur well “Lutzschwefelbad”, accessible to the public for washings and immersion baths, as well as for Kneipp pools.

The existing facility was renovated in 2012 and expanded with an additional, specially developed element consisting of a bathing pool and the so-called “hot stone.” Water from Buchboden’s drinking water sources is heated in the pool by an integrated wood stove to up to 40 degrees Celsius, which also warms the hot stone. The pool holds approximately 3,000 liters and can accommodate 8 to 10 people.
