Temporary School Building
Studio SAAL – Vaduz, Liechtenstein
The temporary school building has been made available to the Vocational Secondary School of Liechtenstein, accommodating their space requirements for several years. A future reuse or repurposing of the new building is intended to be possible.
The placement of the building structure encloses the courtyard of the Giessen school building.
Lightness achieved through internal load-bearing. By using solid wood elements, it was possible to transfer the load primarily through the interior walls. This allowed the facade to be designed relatively slim, without the need for expensive or complex reinforcements.
Sustainability through material selection. Solid wood construction, exposed panels, untreated. Mineral wool insulation, corrugated metal facade, screwed. The building can therefore be completely dismantled and reassembled elsewhere, or at least recycled. Light-filled learning spaces and high-quality common areas were created despite the very compact design.
“Off the Shelf” – Aesthetics with cost savings through repetition. The size of standard, readily available components served as parameters for axis and construction measurements. The rawness and simplicity of the materials are softened by carefully placed details at points of interaction.
The execution in timber element construction was chosen, not least due to the potential time savings offered by the high level of prefabrication.
