The creation of the over 20 km long Danube Island as flood protection and a recreational area is one of Vienna’s most sustainable achievements. As an interface between the residents of the densely populated “transdanubian” residential areas and the recreation seekers from the inner districts, Copa Cagrana has exemplarily gained central importance for the city’s cultural self-identity within an increasingly diverse society. At this junction, an urban culture articulates itself, reflecting different social milieus, ethnicities, and ideologies.
