Wildspitzbahn
Baumschlager Hutter Partner Architects – Pitztal Glacier, Austria
At 3,429 meters above sea level, it is the highest mountain station in Austria. The ropeway was completely renewed and extended with a restaurant. The unique view of the Alps is the starting point for all considerations and the chosen design language. Minimal footprint, glacier tongue, steeply sloping mountain sides, and the rather extreme altitude with corresponding sunlight, wind, and thin air greatly limit the possibilities. A steel-aluminum construction placed on the existing foundations forms the basis. The structure integrates into the formal world of the “snow architecture” created by nature, which exists year-round.
