House in the Klostertal
Hammerer Architects – Klostertal, Austria
When approaching the house from a distance, it could easily be mistaken for an agricultural building, blending harmoniously into the alpine landscape like a traditional hay barn. The compact structure with its uniform gabled roof reinforces this impression. The house is organized over two levels. On the upper floor, the rammed earth stove forms the heart of the home. Designed as a whole-house wood heating system, this space is where cooking, eating, talking and relaxing take place, all within an open room facing south. The adjacent terrace, with its wooden slat facade, creates a transitional space between the indoors and outdoors. The facade structure generates a dynamic play of light and shadow, serving as an atmospheric trigger. The lower level houses bedrooms and two bathrooms. The vertical connection is made via a solid wood spiral staircase, illuminated from above by a sky light.
