Henauer & Witschi Architects – Zürich, Switzerland

Former Zürich Stock Exchange turns Night Club.

The Old Stock Exchange, not far from Paradeplatz in Zurich, was the largest Swiss trading venue for securities until 1992, when it moved to the new building at Stauffacher Bridge. Planned and built between 1928 and 1930 by Zurich Architects Henauer and Witschi, the large, tower-like corner risalit stands out.

Its cylindrical shape and vertical articulation clearly indicate the corner entrance situation, housing a staircase, while also making a confident statement towards Paradeplatz with its bank headquarters. Behind the street-facing facades with long horizontal window bands are offices that surround the main trading hall and, above it, the stock exchange. The ground floor is reserved for public uses such as cafes and shops. The main trading floor has been converted into a night club.
